Enormous sandstone and quartz formations rise to 150 feet and measure 70 feet wide in some areas. It is believed that the Cherokee Indians and other tribes used these formations for religious and ceremonial rites. Native Americans Lived in this area from 8000 B.C. until the Cherokee Indian Removal, commonly called the "Trail of Tears" in 1838.
