WEISS LAKE
The Crappie Capital of the World

Cherokee County in northeast Alabama can truly make a case for number one position in the State's recreation picture. The popularity of WEISS LAKE is reflected in the fact that more out-of-state fishing licenses are issued here than at any other site in Alabama. This lake is renowned for producing 2 lb.+ crappie.

WEISS LAKE, owned by Alabama Power Company, is a 30,200+ acre hydro-electric impoundment of the Coosa, Chattooga, and Little Rivers offering 447 miles of shoreline with shallow flats, under-water dropoffs, deep channels and large coves. Privately owned motels, marinas, campgrounds, boat and motor rentals, guide service, bait and supply shops are all available.

More out-of-state fishing licenses are sold at this lake than at any other lake in the State of Alabama.
Renowned for producing 2-pound+ crappie consistently, Weiss Lake offers 447 miles of shoreline, shallow flats, underwater drop offs, deep channels, and large covers. The lower part of the lake provides some trophy bass.

Best Seasons: February through May are top months for crappie, with
September, October and November also being good. Best bass months are
February through May, and in October and November.

Mean temperature: annually, 60o F; January, February, 37o F. In March
and April, 45-50o F; July, 79o F.

Baits and Lures: For crappie, take some 1/8-ounce plastic or hair jigs,
or use minnows under a float. For bass, crank baits, spinner baits and
plastic works are top choices.

WEISS LAKE POSSESSION LIMITS & LENGTH LIMITS
Some of the following limits are specific exceptions allowed by the
State of Alabama for Weiss Lake PLEASE NOTE: It shall be unlawful for any
angler to fish with more than three rods and reels, or poles, or any
combination thereof on Weiss Lake Reservoir at any time.

Crappie: 
white, black, hybrids and/or sub-species, must be at least 10-inches, 30 in possession.

Black Bass: 
largemouth, smallmouth, redeye and/or spotted, no size restrictions, 10 in possession.

Bream: 
Bluegill, shell crackers and other sunfish species, no size restrictions, 50 in possession."

Walleye: 
no size restrictions, 5 in possession.

Temperate Bass:
White, yellow, striped and/or hybrids, no size restrictions in Lake Weiss, 30 in possession.

State law varies from body-of-water to body-of-water. Check your
local laws covering your particular fishing lake.

It is a violation of Alabama law for any person to transport more than
one day's creel limit of any species of game fish beyond the boundaries
of this State. It is a violation of Alabama law for any person to fillet
freshwater fish while on public waters, except when fish are being
prepared for immediate cooking and consumption; provided, however,
that fish may be drawn or gutted with heads left attached.
